Tips for Shopping Children Consignment Sales

So here it is! Our first video debut! Consignment season is kicking into high gear and Eastern Shore Mom has some great tips to share with readers. Personally, I have consigned my children's clothes once, shopped twice and volunteered once. For me, it was tough because I would get in the door and see all of the stuff and think--Oh my, this is way too much. I would just get overwhelmed. Well, last night I learned what I was doing wrong.
Yes, there are secrets to shopping consignment sales and ESM is sharing them with all of us!

1. Just like with Publix, when shopping consignment sales you want to make a list of needs and wants. Focus.
2. You'll want to bring along something to tote your goodies in(laundry basket w/ belt).
3. Big items first! They will tag and reserve the item, so you can finish shopping.
4. Be sure to write down child's sizes and trace your child's foot on a piece of paper for shoe shopping. Consider shopping for this summer and next summer's size.
5. Always check the boy section for unisex shoes(Crocs, Keds).
6. Look for NEW items at a consignment sale.
7. Find a place to sort what you have in your basket. Make sure that you have everything from your list. Tops to match shorts, etc...Hang unwanted items in specified locations.
8. Monogram on an outfit wrong? Consider put an applique over it!
9. Take a couple batteries with you to test electronics.
10. Volunteer or Consign!!! Volunteering/consigning gets you in the door to shop before the public.

As you can see we had a good time. However, I want you to know that I was truly impressed with the items at Kidz Klozet. It was well laid out/organized and the prices were GREAT. The video was fun. You can get a feel of our personalities if you have not met us in person. Eastern Shore Mom knows her stuff when it comes to consignments! I am super excited about shopping my "first" sale with ESM's tips and the video blogs to come...Can we make another one today?!?

Daphne: FREE Safe Driving Course

This is too important to pass up--If you have a young driver between the ages of 15 and 24, you definitely want to read this. I attended a safe driving course with my previous employer...One of the best things I ever did. The class for tomorrow is full. However, registration is open for the April classes.

Citrin Law Firm brings the Alive at 25 Safe Driving Program to Alabama Gulf Coast

Citrin Law Firm has joined forces with the National Safety Council to bring the Alive at 25 young driver intervention program to the Alabama Gulf Coast. This proven program zeros in on drivers between the ages of 15 and 24 – the group most likely to be involved in fatal collisions. Young drivers who graduate from this high impact course are 90% less likely to be killed in an automobile accident.

To bring awareness and training to young drivers and parents, Citrin Law Firm and the National Safety Council are providing the trainers, facilities and training materials free of charge to train up to 300 young drivers. Young drivers between the ages of 15 and 24 are invited to participate FREE of charge.

Visiting the Butcher

As I mentioned in a previous post, today I wanted to check out the meat sales first hand. Butchers gave me tips to share...One even let me in on a little secret, next week should be great for buying meat at Winn Dixie. I shared with them my goals of the weekly meat find the BEST possible prices. Sure $2.99/lb is good for a pork loin, but $1.99 is better....$0.99 for a whole chicken is decent but $0.69 is a definite stockpiling price. So as we watch and chart over the next couple of weeks the stockpile prices will become obvious. It's going to help me and hopefully you too!

So here are the pics/tips from today's trip to the butcher.

1. Always compare the family pack($2.44/lb) vs. the standard pack($2.58/lb). Family packs are usually cheaper by lb...even better when they come with a $1.50 clearance sticker! Winn Dixie has ground beef $1.99/lb.

2. Always look for coupons on meat(stickers)! Usually they are placed on meat in the a.m. These stickers are found at Winn Dixie, Brunos and Food World and were plentiful.

3. Ask the butcher!

The WD butcher was determined to sell The BB these B1G1 FREE country style boneless pork ribs. These are cut from the top portion of the pork loin.

Top(roast, country style ribs)->Bottom(pork chops)->

Butchers will usually cut the loins for free...always ask(nicely). I would wait to buy a loin until they are $1.99/lb! Then stock up!

On A Budget: Meat starting 2/24

Whole Chicken .99/lb Winn Dixie (best price .69/lb)
Split Chicken Breast B1G1 Winn Dixie
Leg Quarters .59/lb Food World
Leg Quarters(10 lb bag) .69/lb Winn Dixie

Chicken 101:
Chicken is graded with A, B, C. Grade A being the best chicken that you will find in the supermarkets. Read more here.

Boneless Chuck Roast, USDA "Choice" $2.99/lb Winn Dixie
Boneless Chuck Roast Swift Angus "Select" $1.98/lb Greer's
Ground Beef $1.99/lb Winn Dixie (guessing that this is chuck but will confirm)

Beef 101:
Prime-Best of the best. High degree of marbling. Tender and flavorful. Usually sold in speciality markets.
Choice-Very good quality. Marbling. This is what you will find in your grocery stores.
Select- A lot less marbling. Can be tough and dry if not prepare right. Most commonly available in U.S.
Standard/Commerical- ungraded or store brand.

Boneless Center Cut Pork Chops B1G1 Winn Dixie
Spare Ribs $1.99/lb Winn Dixie/Food World
Spare Ribs (3 slabs) $1.79/lb Winn Dixie

Pork:101 No grading. Look for meat that appears firm, grayish pink with some marbling.
